Kids love books about dogs, so this weeks “Fifth Paw Book Ruffview” pick is for kids! I am not exactly sure of the age range, but it feels slightly younger than Harry Potter. It is classified as juvenile fiction.
I’ll admit that I have read my share young adult novels and, quite frankly, I enjoy many of them more than adult fiction. Novels written for adults usually focus on tired old grown up themes which we already experience in everyday life or at least see constantly on the news. Stories written for young adults and kids have a purer sense of wonder and adventure unencumbered by the trappings of adulthood.
The Survivors: The Gathering Darkness #1: A Pack Divided is the first book in the second series that that makes up The Survivors Saga authored by Erin Hunter. I have not read the first series in this saga, although it is not necessary to enjoy this book. However, if you wish to start at the beginning, start with “Survivors #1: The Empty City”. Kids with sensitivity to animals, dogs especially will really get into this tale. It centers on a pack of wild dogs in an environment that feels remote and devoid of humans.
In this current installment, we follow the story of “Storm”, a female dog from a now disbanded pack called “The Fierce Dogs”. Now incorporated into her new pack Storm is responsible for leading the hunting parties and making sure the pack gets fed. But there is a growing unrest within the pack as well as within Storm herself that she must face. Nagging mistrust of the “Fierce Dogs” within the pack threatens to undermine the group’s very stability and structure. Can they truly trust & count on each other? Their survival depends on it. Added to this, is Storms internal struggle with her growing awareness of a darkness within herself that she sooner or later face. How long before other notice she is sleepwalking?
What I find interesting about this novel is how it examines how dogs might view spirituality. How they might explain their origins, their surroundings and their connection to it all.
I also liked how the author Erin Hunter looks at Family/The Pack in this story, whether the families we are born into, or the ones we create/form out of necessity, location, circumstance or shared experience.
I would have greatly enjoyed this story growing up and I know your non-furry kids will to!
